The episode starts at Castle Doom with Zarkon speaking to Witch Haggar, Yurak, and one of his (Yurak's) men.
"This is your last warning! Heed my words! I want Voltron destroyed! You did it once, witch, broke him into five pieces, now Voltron's back and more powerful than ever! I want the Voltron Force captured! I'll teach them to defy Zarkon!" |
As Zarkon yells, Witch Haggar's cat, Coba (Kova, Cova, Koba - not sure what the exact spelling is supposed to be), hisses and growls at the King of Doom, to which he responds, "I don't need your opinion." Zarkon continues, "and bring me the Princess, understood?" |
Haggar explains she has a new plan - all Zarkon has to do is choose his biggest, baddest, meanest, gladiator and she will change him into a RoBeast that can defeat Voltron.
Zarkon calls his Robot Gladiators into the arena to fight and destroy one another so they can choose a winner (or victim?). Haggar says "Voltron will trouble you no more, Sire." |
The scene changes to a series of different areas (presumably) within Castle Doom, and the arena.
The scene changes to a series of different areas (presumably) within Castle Doom, and the arena.
The slaves are beaten (or maybe killed?) by Zarkon's men.
Meanwhile, at the arena...
The gladiators fight, some begin to fall (die). Zarkon declares, "good riddance! We don't want weaklings - let the winning robot fight three challengers!" We see the "gladiators" fighting until only one is left standing. Zarkon tells the gladiator that Witch Haggar is going to prepare him for his mission to destroy Voltron. |
The scene abruptly changes and we hear Lance speaking to people we see hiding in a cave.
"People of Arus, we escaped from Zarkon's slave dungeons and saw your planet under attack. We can free your world, but we need your help. Zarkon's planning another invasion. He'll come back and hunt you down. He'll make you all his slaves. We're asking your help for the sake of your Princess." |
The scene changes again and we see Pidge and Hunk, who don't see to be having any better luck in convincing the people of Arus to come out of hiding and help.
Hunk - "Listen you people, give us a break! There's only five of us and there's a lot of you who could help. You don't have to fight, but we could use some support!"
Pidge - "Yeah, like maybe a delicious home-cooked meal?" Hunk - "We're not real finicky eaters, honest." Pidge - "Maybe if they don't want to cook here, we could all eat at the castle!" |
No one offers to help, and the scene changes once more.
But the Lion's laser blasters aren't even scratching him! The Lions are trying, but as Hunk says "You're dreaming! We're just like pesky little flies to him!"
The RoBeast tosses the Lions around like they're nothing! Keith decides they've got to form Voltron!
The RoBeast and Voltron begin to fight... but the RoBeast kicks Voltron and its toes... claws... toe-claws? rip right into Yellow Lion and nearly skewer Hunk!
The fight continues and things don't look good for Voltron. Allura suggests to the team that they try their "isotopic missiles" - Sven tells her they've tried just about everything... One of the space mice runs in and lets Allura know there's going to be an attack on the castle! |
Allura - "My father would never have bowed to Zarkon, and I still have faith in Voltron. My poor people have already suffered. They have nothing. As long as the castle was standing they could feel there was hope the planet would recover. Now it will be gone. If only father could advise me. He always believed Voltron could protect us." |
The Doom fighters continue to attack the castle and we see Voltron watch helplessly as the castle is destroyed.
Voltron tries to go help, but the RoBeast is kicking his butt! The RoBeast holds Voltron back, watching as the castle is blown to pieces!

And back to the crypts… King Alfor appears.
King Alfor - "My daughter, Zarkon took my life but not my spirit. Has not the mighty robot freed you from his evil?"
Allura - "Zarkon's about to destroy Voltron." Alfor - "Touch the center of my crown and you will be victorious, my daughter." King Alfor fades away and Allura touches the center of the crown on his coffin... |

Later on, back at the Castle of Lions…
Allura - "The people of Arus are grateful to our friends, the Voltron Force, who fought bravely, and stopped Zarkon from destroying our planet. Thanks to you, we can begin restoring our world. I, Princess Allura, proudly join with Keith, Lance, Sven, Hunk and Pidge, who are forever entrusted with the secret of
Voltron, Defender of the Universe!"
Grab a snack and head right back! Episode 6 will be here before you know it!
Important Info:
As Zarkon yells, Witch Haggar's cat, Coba (Kova, Cova, Koba - not sure what the exact spelling is supposed to be), hisses and growls at the King of Doom, to which he responds, "I don't need your opinion."
What It Means:
1 - Coba is protective of Haggar. (As someone who has always had at least 1 feline living in her household, I can personally attest to just how protective a cat can be when it comes to defending their person. In fact a cat can be just as protective, aggressive, and vicious when it comes to defending their person, home, territory, etc., than a dog - maybe even more so in some cases.)
2 - When Zarkon speaks to Coba, he either speaks cat, or has at least some kind of sense of humor…
Important Info:
Zarkon continues, "and bring me the Princess, understood?"
What It Means:
Zarkon wants Allura, the purpose is unclear - slave, concubine, status symbol, hostage, to personally kill - why does he want her?
Important Info:
The Drule soldiers seem uncertain of Witch Haggar's ability to improve a robot gladiator to a degree that it could defeat Voltron.
What It Means:
1 - The Drule soldiers/people are uncertain of Haggar's abilities and power. Is this because they are unfamiliar with her? Is she new to the court? Perhaps she's never done anything like this before? Or maybe everything she's done in the past has failed? Or is this a testament to Voltron's strength and power - perhaps it's not Haggar they are uncertain of, but they don't believe Voltron can be defeated. This leads to many questions.
2 - The Drule soldiers/people are speaking with an openness about their thoughts - does this mean they don't respect Haggar and her power? Do they doubt Zarkon's ability, or choices? The impression given thus far is that anyone who displeases Zarkon will be killed, so it's doubtful that the Drule society is democratic, or encourages public questions and debates.
Important Info:
The gladiators are assembled. Yurak tells Zarkon, "we don't need witchcraft, sire, my robots can completely destroy planet Arus and the Voltron Force!"
What It Means:
This reinforces the idea that the Drules do not approve, or have faith in, Haggar and her powers. The reason for that remains unclear.
Important Info:
"You do good work, Haggar." Zarkon replies.
What It Means:
Zarkon must greatly approve of Haggar's methods since we rarely, if ever, hear/see him offer praise.
Important Info:
The gladiators fight, some begin to fall (die). Zarkon declares, "good riddance! We don't want weaklings - let the winning robot fight three challengers!"
What It Means:
Zarkon has no tolerance for what he sees as weak or inferior.
Important Info:
Haggar is speaking to her cat, "Here's where the fun starts my evil pet."

1 - Haggar is a crazy old cat lady.
2 - Haggar's idea of a fun time includes death and destruction.
Important Info:
[Haggar says] "Soon you'll arrive on Planet Arus in a space coffin and Voltron will be finished."
What It Means:
1 - Haggar is absolutely confident in her skills.
2 - The ship the RoBeast is transported in is called a "space coffin".
Important Info:
[Lances says] Zarkon's planning another invasion.
What It Means:
Somehow the Voltron Force/Planet Arus is aware of the activity on Planet Doom. Is this due to a spy? Is there someone (like a double agent) sharing information? Or is this simply a common sense dictates, type of thing?
Important Info:
As Keith pulls him up, Lance quips, "I gave ‘em too much room."
What It Means:
1 - Keith constantly has everyone's back.
2 - Lance is always making sarcastic/smart-ass remarks.

2 - Keith understands what motivates people.
Important Info:
The team goes to give Allura and Sven the "bad news" - Pidge explains that no one wants to help. Allura replies that her subjects are scared - Zarkon's attack was "brutal" and most of her people were taken as slaves.
What It Means:
1 - Allura's use of the word "brutal" is important in reinforcing just how terrible the situation is/has been on Arus.
2 - Most of her people were taken as slaves.
Important Info:
Hunk suggests that they use Voltron to attack Zarkon. Allura is immediately incensed and she insists that Voltron is a "DEFENDER" and "never attacks first." Coran chimes in saying that Zarkon wants them all as slaves, "but the slave Zarkon desires most is Princess Allura."
What It Means:
1 - Allura has very clear boundaries and ideas when it comes to Voltron's role and use.
2 - Voltron is meant to be used for defense only.
3 - Zarkon wants Allura. Again, why?

Keith (looking furious) turns to Coran, "If he so much as lays a hand on her, I'll-"
What It Means:
Keith is extremely protective of Allura. Is this a foreshadowing of a potential relationship, or simply that Keith is protective of his friends?
Important Info:
Just then, a space mouse runs up and alerts Allura of an impending attack - RIGHT NOW!
What It Means:
1 - The space mice are aware of the impending attack before the Voltron Force - do they not see the Doom ships arriving? Are the Doom ships using some sort of camoflauge?
2 - How did the space mouse garner this information?
Important Info:
"Duck!" Sven yells as he springs into action and pushes Allura out of the way of a laser beam.
What It Means:
1 - Sven just saved Allura's life.
2 - Sven was willing to risk his life to save Allura's life.
3 - Sven is a hero.
Important Info:
Allura tells Coran, "Zarkon has produced a terrible new monster" as they watch the RoBeast on the view-screen.
What It Means:
This makes me wonder if the RoBeast is a completely new concept, or if Zarkon has attacked using some sort of monster in the past.
Important Info:
Coran - "If Voltron loses this one, our world is lost!"
Allura (angrily) - "He won't lose! My father created him and the Voltron Force knows how to use him."

2 - Allura has unyielding faith in Voltron and the Voltron Force's ability to use him.
3 - King Alfor created Voltron.
Important Info:
The fight continues and things don't look good for Voltron. Allura suggests to the team that they try their "isotopic missiles" - Sven tells her they've tried just about everything...
What It Means:
One of the weapons employed by Voltron is "isotopic missiles".
Important Info:
One of the space mice runs in and lets Allura know there's going to be an attack on the castle!
What It Means:
Again, the space mouse seems to have information about an impending attack that no one else has. Where is this little guy getting his information?
Important Info:
Yurak commands his fighters to turn the castle into rubble, declaring this is the last day for planet Arus, but he's going to save Princess Allura to please King Zarkon.
What It Means:
Again, Zarkon wants Allura. Again, his reason remains unknown. This makes me think there must be an interesting back story.
Important Info:
Coran - "Hopeless! Contact Zarkon! Surrender!"
Allura - "Never!"
What It Means:
1 - Coran seems quick to quit and surrender. (This really seems out of character to me.)
2 - Allura isn't giving up without a fight.
Important Info:
Coran - "This castle is all you have left, beg Zarkon to spare it!"
Allura - "My father would never have bowed to Zarkon, and I still have faith in Voltron. My poor people have already suffered. They have nothing. As long as the castle was standing they could feel there was hope the planet would recover. Now it will be gone. If only father could advise me. He always believed Voltron could protect us."
The Princess sees Sven in her mind's eye, he's saying "we need help, Princess!"
Allura (determined) - "I'll fight!"
Coran (looking mortified) - "Oh no!"
What It Means:
1 - The castle seems to be all that's left of Allura's kingdom on Planet Arus. Are there towns, etc., still standing? Why is the castle so important?
2 - Alfor would never have given up (to Zarkon).
3 - The people of Arus have suffered and have nothing left.
4 - (Okay!) The castle is/was a symbol of hope for the people/planet Arus.

2 - They believe in ghosts/spirits.
3 - They are praying/seeking help from Alfor in their time of need.
Important Info:

What It Means:
This tells us a lot about Allura's father - he was thoughtful and methodical. He not only planned, but prepared for the worst.
Important Info:
King Alfor fades away and Allura touches the center of the crown on his coffin…
Everything begins to shake and we see a new, modern looking castle rise out of the rubble and ruins of the old one.
What It Means:

Important Info:
Everyone, including Allura and Coran, seem shocked, the Voltron Force seems impressed, while Yurak is incredulous. Even better, this new castle begins firing on Yurak's ship, sending him scurrying!
What It Means:
Correction, somehow Alfor built an entire castle under the original castle without anyone knowing! How does that happen? Think about the effort it would take for someone to build an entire castle without anyone knowing. Wow.
Important Info:
Keith - "Hey, hey! The Princess has joined the battle! Looks like the Voltron Force has a new member!"
We see it's not just anyone firing on Yurak's ship - It's Princess Allura!!
