004 - The Missing Key
Haggar finally speaks. . . "Sire, the Voltron Force found the 4 lions of the robot!" Zarkon is clearly displeased and yells, "WHAT?!?" Haggar continues, "But they need 5 keys to form Voltron. . .and before they do, my RoBeast's strength will be increased! (she cackles) They'll be finished by morning." |
Zarkon sounds worried. "But if they find number 5. . .Voltron!"
"No sire, they cannot form Voltron. . .they do not have the key that operates the 5th Lion." Haggar explains.
"Yurak botched the job, Robeast couldn't finish it! Can no one stop the Voltron Force?" Zarkon demands of Haggar.
"Tomorrow will be the end of them. (she cackles)" Haggar answers.
"Stellagram [I think that's what was said, it was difficult to understand] from Arus, Voltron Force has vanished. They were defending the planet against King Zarkon's forces."
"They discovered the 5 robot lions, but they only found keys for 4 - they need the missing key!"
"Pidge, the youngest, went out alone and encountered trouble. The other 4 flew the robot lions to rescue him and, uh, they have not returned."
"It's not final, they're only missing!"
"If we could only help them, but they're millions of light years away!"
"Let's not forget the small one who went out alone! He may even now be making his way back to Arus Castle with news of the others."
The scene cuts to a man who appears to be guiding Pidge through a cave/cavern by torchlight. He explains to Pidge that many years before, King Alfor had the tunnels dug in case of attack. The people used them to hide from Zarkon's slave ships - Pidge collapses and the man encourages him, explaining it's only a little further to the castle. |
Pidge hurries off, making his way to Castle Control - as he enters, Coran and Allura turn to look at him in surprise.
Coran says, "The small one is back safely!!"
Allura calls out "Pidge!"
Pidge seems weak, and tumbles down the stairs - Allura and Coran rush to help.
A sound is heard coming through the speakers at Castle Control. Pidge looks up and gasps. Pidge says. . . "That's Hunk snoring! It's Hunk! Hunk, I know that's you snoring! Your transwaver must be turned on, you big dummy! I know you're alive now! Wake up, buddy! Did you guys crash?" |
We see Allura, Coran and Pidge are all relieved, Pidge says, "Safe and sound. . .Keith, it's you!" Everyone sounds off, letting Pidge know they're alive. The team heads back to the castle and Pidge promises to never go out alone again but they have to promise too. Pidge says he's "so happy I don't know whether to laugh or cry." |
Next up is Pidge sitting on top of the Control Center (the one that lifts up and down to allow access to the Lions). . .it is rising up, and we see the rest of the team run out of their "doors" and begin looking for Pidge. After a moment, Lance says, "I'll bet he's hiding." |
Things take a serious turn when Sven asks Allura and Coran if they found the 5th key - unfortunately they have not.
Keith says that Yurak's robots are getting ready to attack. The team laments that they must find the last key in order to form Voltron. Everyone goes off to search.
Pidge realizes that those special mice are "his friends, the space mice!" Pidge then fills the team in on how he saw the space mice when they first arrived at the castle, and again that morning when he returned to the castle. Pidge says they [the space mice] ran past him, into their hole, and then one of them yelled something back at him. |
Lance says, "You dreamed it."
Sven suggests "if they like rocks, maybe they ate the key."
Allura appears, upset, and says, "Stop! What are you doing to those poor mice?" She rushes to the cage and continues, "The mice have always been my friends, ever since I was a little girl. It's lonely being an only child, and a royal princess in a huge castle. I seldom saw my parents, they were always attending to royal matters. The mice kept me company and they amused me." |
During her speech, we see Allura remembering her sadness and the space mice all dressed up and dancing the CanCan for her.
She turns back to the Voltron Force and says, "I don't know why you're trapped them, but let them go, please." The Voltron Force explains they think the mice stole the key. Allura turns and asks the mice about the key, after a moment, she tells the team. . . "They said it was pretty and they took it to their nest for a good luck charm." |
Next we see Coran praying at King Alfor's coffin. King Alfor's spirit appears and asks why Coran has awoken him. Coran says he has come to give thanks and that they have all 5 keys and the Voltron Force can form Voltron and defend the planet from King Zarkon. |
The team argues with Coran, who says while he appreciates what they're trying to do, he is thinking of their safety. Keith gets angry and says none of them are safe while they stand around. Allura intervenes and tells the team to go and that they need Voltron. As the team takes off, Allura says "Please return safely!" and they head for the Lions. |
We return to Yurak - he is shocked to see the Lions charging at his ship, saying he thought the RoBeast destroyed them, and those "Big Cats must have 9 lives."
[there will be more to this later, but for now, we'll give Keith a break, it's his first time, after all. . .]"
Voltron!! So we see the Lions forming Voltron and we hear Keith speaking,
So when the big robot lands back on the surface of Arus, the RoBeast rushes him with a sword, but this time, Voltron tosses the RoBeast around! Next, the RoBeast shoots missiles at Voltron (from his belt), Voltron is hit, but stands tall! The RoBeast shoots fire at Voltron but the team puts the fire out with Voltron's megathrusters. The RoBeast grabs his sword but Voltron has a sword of his own - Blazing Sword!
The RoBeast rushes Voltron again! But Voltron makes quick work of things and splits the RoBeast right down the middle!! The RoBeast explodes, and Voltron saves the day!
Next up... Episode 5!

What It Means:
Arus is millions of light years away. In episode 01, information given is that Doom is over 2,000 light years from Earth. Does this mean that Arus is even further away? Is this simply contradictory information due to writers not paying mind to these sorts of details? Was the speaker using "millions of light years" as an exaggeration to emphasis the distance?
Important Info:

After a moment, Lance says, "I'll bet he's hiding."
Keith looks to Allura and Coran, and asks, "Princess, do you know where Pidge is? Is this some sort of a joke? Pidge has a funny sense of humor."
Allura is laughing as she points up at Pidge. The team turns to look as Pidge jumps down, tackling his friends.

Important Info:
[Allura uses the names "Toady" and "Inky" in reference to the mice]
What It Means:
There are many names used for the mice during the overall series, although there are only ever 4 (space) mice shown at once. I don't know if this is an inconsistency in the writing, or if there are more mice in the castle and we only see 4 at a time, or perhaps it's different generations of the same mice family.
Important Info:
The team says if they go get the key, they'll let the mice go - Allura agrees. The mice run off, get the key out of their old boot, and return it to Allura, who hands it to Coran [I don't know when he showed up] and he confirms it is the key, proclaiming, "Voltron shall live again!"

Allura intervenes and tells the team to go and that they need Voltron. As the team takes off, Allura says "Please return safely!" and they head for the Lions.
What It Means:
While Coran seems in charge, it appears that Allura has the final say.

What It Means:
The Lions are not strong enough to defeat the RoBeast.
Important Info:
The team tries to form Voltron, but they're knocked out of the sky. . .they try again, and this time. . .
We hear Keith speaking,
"Get ready to assemble. . .Activate interlocks. . .Dynotherms connected. . .[there will be more to this later, but for now, we'll give Keith a break, it's his first time, after all. . .]"
