I have a few comments on this newest rendition of Voltron, but I am going to do my absolute best to keep it spoiler free. The first thing I want to say is I have mixed feelings about the series. In the beginning I LOVED it, but as it went on, my thoughts and feelings became conflicted.
Overall, I thought the animation was beautifully done, the voice actors were amazing, the music, sound and visual effects were great. The story/plot is where my feelings become mixed.
Now, some people loved it, some hated it, and I'm sure there were people who really didn't care one way or another. But everyone's entitled to their opinion and I really don't want to argue about it.
But here's the thing... Voltron is a 35+ year old animated series.
Let that sink in for a moment.
A lot of today's fans were watching when it first aired back in 1984. That has to say something about the depth of devotion and the level of connection people have to Voltron. If you've been a fan of a cartoon series for 35 years (or more!) there is a deep emotional attachment there - it had to have moved you, it had to have been something special. That should be respected.
In the same breath, change can be hard. Especially when changes (whether tiny tweaks or drastic overhauls) are being made to something you already find near perfection - or at the very least, you remember to be near perfection. But, change can be good, too. Without change, we become stagnant - when things don't change to keep up with modern times, they start to fade away.
There were some drastic changes made to V:LD that brought out extremely strong emotional responses in many fans. There were things about the series that made people angry - furious, even. I can see why and I don't blame anyone for their feelings or thoughts. However, I don't think it's right to attack the actors or artists, or even the writers. It's okay to disagree, it's okay to criticize, but name calling, death threats, threats of violence - those things are unacceptable. You should treat others the way you want to be treated, even if they don't treat you the way they should - and if you're unable to do that, you can always walk away.
I'd just like to say, whether you liked the new series or not, please remember to have respect and compassion for one another. For those who are having a hard time with things, they are entitled to feel that way - but it needs to be remembered that the fans who are loving the new series have a right to their joy and celebration too. Either way, we're all Voltron fans.
Years ago, when Voltron the Third Dimension came out, there was a similar situation - some loved it, some hated it, fans bickered. Same thing with Voltron Force. Back then, I had said something to a group of friends (who were fellow Voltron fans) during the middle of a heated debate and I think it bears repeating now.
When you're a fan and your team is winning, you cheer for them. When you're a fan and your team is losing you cheer harder. You may not like the way the game is looking, but be glad your team is still playing. A true fan doesn't kick their team when they're down.
In closing, I'd like to repeat something... Voltron is a 35+ year old animated series.
Let that sink in for a moment.
Whether you like the changes to the new series or not, those changes are the reason Voltron is still in the game. As a fan who has been around since 1984, I'm thrilled that Voltron is still relevant, even if the new series didn't meet my hopes and expectations.
I do hope everyone will give this series a chance and decide for themselves. You may love it.
