The service was beautiful, poignant everything you'd expect in a wedding. Watching them standing in the receiving line, laughing and joking with the people who are bringing them good wishes, puts a smile on my face and yet, there's a sense of loss.
Which of course is stupid, he's not leaving us, merely moving on with his life as we all have, as I catch my wife's eye from across the room I can't help but marvel at how far we've all come, 5 ratty ill bred space explorers, at least according to Nanny.
My smile fades somewhat, she would have loved to have been here for this, the last of us to get married and the one she'd have more than likely fussed over more than the rest of us put together. As I blink and try to focus away from those not present, I can almost hear Nanny's voice in my ear, 'ack child this is a wedding not a funeral, be happy' and it brings the smile back to my face.
Noting that the line has dwindled down to practically nothing, I'm caught up in a memory one that still as I look back on it surprises me.

"so, you know I proposed right?"
"yeah, congratulations"
"Thanks, so umm…" he's nervous and stammering, which is so unlike him, "wouldyoubemybestman"
It takes me a moment to decipher that last comment, and when I do I'm shocked, I tell him so, and remind him there are others that might expect that honor, he merely smiles and shrugs
"I can't think of anyone I'd rather have"

The hand on my arm and my wife's whisper of 'it's time for the speech' brings me back to the present, and I find myself unaccountably nervous as I take the offered glass and clear my throat, I had an entire speech written and memorized, but now standing here it's all disappeared and I find myself at a loss for words, and suddenly a favored piece of advice from Coran enters my head, 'you can never go wrong when you speak from the heart' and so that is exactly what I do.
"I can't think of two people who deserve this happiness more, may there be years of joy, happiness and a never ending love to your future" I tip my head and my glass and finish with "To the bride and groom."
The party continues and I find myself looking over our group still amazed at the changes some blindingly obvious at least to those who know us, and watching as Hunk leads the bride onto the dance floor I find my feet carrying me across the room to stand beside my comrade in arms, my friend, my brother, the smile and joy on his face telling me without words that he is happy.
"So, Pi…" I shake my head and smile at him in apology, "Sorry, Darrell, still think you chose the proper best man, when I couldn't even do a decent speech?" He tilts his head and looks at me through narrowed eyes and for a moment I'm transported back to that first moment we'd met when all I could think was 'what is GG thinking sending a kid into a mess like this'.
He's quiet for a moment and then he laughs slightly, and rests his hand on my shoulder. "Lance, you're my big brother, I couldn't see anyone else standing with me on this day." the call for the removal of the garter is made, and as he removes his hand from my shoulder and moves forward he glances back at me and grins "and you can still call me Pidge, nicknames are what brothers do isn't it?"
Watching him as he crosses the floor and having my wife come to stand beside me I put my arm around her and I'm hit with the realization that no matter what the changes some things will forever remain the same.
After all, 'Family' is Forever.
