Princess Farla turned to look out of the window. She tried to shake off her nervousness. She had agreed to meet Takashi here in this part of the new Altean fortress.
She was barely sixteen years old to his twenty two and she had only been kissed by him a few times. She didn't have any experience when it came to love and what happen between a man and a woman, but Takashi had promised her that he would be patient and gentle with her. That affection would eventually grow into love.
A blush covered her cheeks as she remembered when they were in the tower installing an antenna and Galra forces attacked. That morning she had breakfast with Raible and the pilot of Blue Lion while the rest of the Force had gone to the nearby villages and caves to speak with the Alteans and convince them to join the fight.
They had chatted easily while Takashi's blue gaze had rested on her like a caress, a promise. She could trust that man, she had told herself. Her life and those of her people were in his hands.
Raible had excused himself to check their provisions leaving them alone in the dining room. The lights flickered suddenly and she gasped in dismay. The old generator had been operating quite well, but she did not have the expertise required to make it run when it did break down.
"Generator trouble?" he asked as they flickered again.
And the next minute the castle was plunged into darkness.
"Yes, I'd better go and look at it," Farla whispered, desperate to escape. What's the matter with her? She thought as she reached the kitchen, going automatically to the cupboard where they kept the candles. She knew exactly what kind of man Takashi Shirogane was, aloof, cold and silent, and yet whenever he came near her she found herself overtaken by the strangest emotions.
"I'm coming with you."
She hadn't heard him approach, and started to refuse, but he merely relieved her of the candle and held open the door with a raised eyebrow that warned her against further argument.
The generator was housed on the floor below the royal family tomb and the princess felt her courage abandon her as she opened the panel door and flashed the candle around. She had only the vaguest idea of what might be wrong. Her advisor normally dealt with these emergencies. She looked at the motionless machine.
"Do you know what you're doing?"
She ignored the bored question, swearing silently as she tried to think of all Raible had told her about generators. It didn't help. She hadn't paid much attention. The silence seemed to grow around them, until she was gently pushed aside with an instruction to hold the candle steady.
"I'm not familiar with this Altean technology," he exclaimed wryly, nevertheless his long fingers seemed to know exactly what to do, and Farla heard the reassuring thud of the machine at it was re-started.
"Thank you," she said tentatively. She was already at the door. The last thing she wanted was to be alone with this man in such close quarters. "I hope your friends can convince my people to come out of the caves. They have suffered so much."
"But how many can they reach?" he asked. "Perhaps if we had an antenna to send a space message…"
"That's a great idea!" she exclaimed. "I think we have some old antennas that might still be working. Let me get one. You can sit in the control room and wait for your friends." She did her best to sound calm. "It won't take long."
"I don't mind. I want to take another look of the castle."
Farla hurried forward, entering the labyrinth of tunnels without hesitation. Shirogane moved in his usual silent way, but she was too aware of him. And he seemed so uninterested that she felt close to tears.
Just breath, she thought nervously. And carry a monologue if that is what he desires.
"The history of Altea is very colorful; you could go to the castle library to find out more. I think you would find the books of my ancestors' quite fascinating."
Shirogane sensed her growing agitation and thought that whatever she needed or wanted he would provide. He knew she was physically attracted to him; he just had to wait for the right moment to make a move.
She stopped directly in front of what appeared to be a solid wall. The pilot reached past her to run his palm over the smooth surface. Her fingers caught his to guide them to the shallow depression. The wall slid soundlessly away to reveal the vault. She punched several buttons on the keypad. The door to the vault opened.
Taking a deep breath, she braced herself to pick an old antenna off the floor.
"What the devil!" the incredulous words escaped from his lips. Farla was shouldered aside as Shirogane took over from her, his grip much surer than hers as he pulled the antenna upright, supporting its weight with an ease which Farla envied.
"What the hell are you doing?" he exclaimed, his wide eyes going from her bowed shoulders to the blond hair falling over her face.
"I can manage," she retorted. "Or did you think that Raible did all the work?"
"What I thought," he countered in quiet tones, "it's about time someone around here started looking after you."
"I'm not helpless," she said haughtily.
She gasped when he seized her hand, forcing her to stare at her reflection on the antenna. "I don't doubt that, but just take a look," he demanded. "And tell me what you see."
She blushed hotly. Tendrils of hair had escaped her braid, but it wasn't her hair that caught her attention, but the exhausted pallor on her skin and the shadows beneath her eyes.
"You're exhausted," he said, his voice deadly quiet. "What's the matter? Why won't you accept my help?"
"I'm not tired," she replied stubbornly.
Her tone brought Shirogane's eyes to her face in a look of thorough inspection.
"Princess, are you afraid of me?" he demanded, suddenly changing the subject.
She swallowed hard. Afraid of him? If only he knew!
When she remained silent, his lips lifted in a slight smile and their only other conversation were his curt replies to her questions about his one-year captivity in Galra as he took the antenna to the right tower far more easily that she would have done herself.
"What're you up to, Quiet?" Shorty exclaimed as he came toward them, followed by Kogane, Kurogane and Seido. Raible appeared minutes later.
Farla and Shirogane stared at the boy for a few moments, and then she replied, "With this we will send a space message… an appeal to resist the Galra Empire."
Shorty grinned at her. "Oh, you should leave mechanical stuff to me."
Kurogane gave the pilot of Blue Lion a suspicious look. "It's kind of weird for Quiet to send a message when he hardly ever talks."
Shirogane couldn't hide his reaction, the subtle tensing of his body. Farla's blue eyes caught his gaze and before he could retaliate, Hothead said angrily that it was a good idea because Alteans aren't worth relying on after all. They had to call outside help.
Raible was incensed! Farla was shocked and asked Seido not to belittle her people. The strategist told them not to be conceited just because they were the pilots of the lions; the people of Altea knew how hard it was to manage, and they needed more than cheap bravery to fight the Galra Empire.
A scowling Kogane retorted that he had long resigned to this kind of life, and the other four pilots agreed unequivocally. Nodding stiffly, the royal advisor restated his trust on them.
Then one of the mice appeared and whispered into Farla's ear, and her eyes widened in shock when the creature said the enemy was coming.
"The enemy! Look out!" Shirogane shouted warningly to the princess as the laser struck the antenna, but the warning came too late and it was only his quick reflexes that protected her from being showered by the debris.
"To the lions!" Kogane barked.
"Okay?" Shirogane gasped.
"Yes," Farla stammered as his eyes swept her before grabbing her hand and running back inside the castle.
She thought Shirogane was a gentle man. He had been kind to her so far, in the three months since their arrival. Gentle and patient; except when the two came into Castle Control so he could get to Blue Lion and catch up with his friends.
"Princess!"
"You must go!"
Frowning, he pulled her to the tower that led to the chutes, her eyes widening as he placed his hands on either side of her body, imprisoning her to the wall.
"What are you doing?"
"Wait for me," he said cryptically, and his thumb brushed her lips. His expression was grim, and Farla didn't know what to think.
Afterwards they met in the castle grounds where Shirogane confessed his growing feelings for her.
"But you never said anything."
"Not in words, perhaps." His expression was wry. "But surely the way I reacted to you physically must have told you something."
"Not really, you're so… secretive." She blushed under his teasing amusement.
"So innocent… and so brave," he said huskily. "Princess, I know that our work in Altea is just beginning. You deserve to be happy, but I want you to be happy with me. If you think you can."
"I want to be," she said in a hesitant voice. "But I'm afraid to hope."
"I know it might be hard and there will be opposition. But we can find happiness, Farla. Together. What do you say?"
The princess gazed at him, her eyes filling with tears. "Yes."
And then, as Farla's heart trembled with joy, he leaned forward and claimed her lips...
"Princess?"
Shirogane's voice brought her back to the present and she saw him around the landing, his faint smile deepening.
"What are you doing hiding up there?" he asked, stretching one hand towards her.
"I..." Farla licked her dry lips.
"What's wrong?"
"I needed some quiet time to think," she whispered. Shirogane beckoned her towards him and she came down the stairs and stood before him.
He cupped her cheek with one hand. His palm was warm and the tender gesture sent sparks through her belly. "Yes, we need this quiet time alone because tomorrow the team is going to the villages to distribute the food."
"I'll go with you," she said excitedly. "I want to reach out to my people and tell them that Golion is back, thanks to you and your friends."
"If that's your wish." He smiled down at her. "But we better ask Chief first."
She frowned. "Do we have to?" she murmured. "He will surely say no, he's a rough man."
"Sometimes," he said, carefully whisking the loose strands of hair from her cheek and tucking them behind her ear. "But he's fair leader. Please allow yourself a chance to know him."
She sighed quietly. "If you say so, Shiro."
"Kogane cares about us, especially you- Shiro? You call me Shiro?"
"It seems right to call you that. Is not what the others call you?"
His broad shoulders shifted faintly. "They always call me Quiet."
She traced his crooked smile with a fingertip. "It suits you."
"It's almost midnight, we should get some sleep. But before that…"
"What?"
"A kiss," Shiro murmured pulling her toward him, his hands sliding up to cup her face as his lips came down to hers. Her hands fisted in his tunic and she stood on her tiptoes to bring his hard body closer to hers, unable to keep herself from it, not realizing how revealing her response was until Shiro chuckled and eased her away from him.
"We have time," he promised tightly, barely controlling his arousal. "All the time in the world to learn about us."
Blushing, Farla pressed her fingers to her lips and he grinned, satisfied by her innocent reaction.
"Good night, princess."
"Good night, Shiro," she whispered happily and then turning around and hurrying up the stairs, knowing the quiet knight would always watch over her.
